Carre D’As Sanitary Project
NGO Name: Pont du Tamarinier
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
10.Reduce inequality within and among countries
11.Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
Project Overview
Carre d’As is a village situated on the main road of Black River, adjacent to London Way Supermarket where 48 families live in precarious living conditions. Le Pont du Tamarinier (LPDT), for the last 13 years, has accompanied these families and advocated for them to obtain decent housing. In the meantime, LPDT has also implemented projects to better their living conditions while they wait for the social housing project to be realized. Most families have no access to water in their homes and have limited access to the reservoirs that are situated in the village. The Carre d’As Sanitary Project provided effective solutions to better their living conditions. With our partners and the habitants of the village, a solution was found.
Project Update (June 2021)
There were only two water reservoirs in the village of Carre D’As and their locations are not ideal for every family. One of the reservoirs was the point for washing, as many families do not have a place in their homes to wash their laundry or dishes. This resulted in unsanitary, stagnant water accumulation next to the reservoir. Not to mention the smell and the attraction of insects and rodents.
Project Update (August 2021)
The trees were cleared, and a way was made for the JCB to gain access to the site. The JCB moved the current water tank out of the way to prepare for the soak away pit. The pit was then dug and filled with rocks and macadam.
Project Update (September 2021)
The trees were cleared, and a way was made for the JCB to gain access to the site. The JCB moved the current water tank out of the way to prepare for the soakaway pit. The pit was then dug and filled with rocks and macadam.
Project Update (October 2021)
Plumbing of the sinks was completed as was the building of the steel frame to hold the second water tank. One of the tanks was placed on the cement base.
Project Update (November 2021)
The JCB was brought in to raise the water tank onto the frame. The top water tank feeds into the lower tank increasing the water pressure.
The water tanks have been connected to a system of pipes running between the homes creating four water points around the village for easier access to water.
Project Update (December 2021)
The inhabitants of Carre d’As now have a place to wash clothes and dishes more easily.
Thank you to all involved to make this a reality – a great collaboration between the local NGO, village council and funders.

Project Summary
After 8 years, I CAN Special Needs School are relocating their school as their current landlord is returning to Mauritius. A building has been identified in the same town, Beau Bassin, which suits their needs well – space indoors and outdoors, parking etc. The new building requires attention as it has been standing vacant and needs to be adapted to support the children and their individual needs.
Project Overview
We are very grateful to our funder who has ensured that the plumbing of the school building can be refurbished in such a way so as to accommodate the children with their special needs. We are one step closer to the school being opened. Thank you!
