Project Summary
The Marclaine Antoine Music School is an initiative of the Université des Mascareignes (UdM) in association with the ENL Foundation. This initiative aims to carry out a large-scale and innovative project in the Camp Levieux district, where UdM is located by firstly offering access to free or reduced-cost music to young people in the working-class neighborhoods of Camp Levieux, Stanley and Plaisance. Secondly, to decompartmentalize the University by making it one of the central players in this project (hosting courses and/or school events; student involvement, etc.). Our desire is to open up the field of possibilities to the children who benefit from school lessons which are delivered by the François Mitterrand Conservatory of Music.
Detailed Proposal
Camp Levieux is a neighborhood that is most often described as “difficult” or even “disadvantaged”. The presence of a university in its heart is an asset to it. Thus, the UdM has decided to join forces with the Conservatoire National de Musique François Mitterrand and ENL Foundation to offer an innovative space in the neighborhood through the creation of this music school.
The Marclaine Antoine Music School will be an addition to the Conservatoire National de Musique François Mitterrand Region, which exists across the island.
Classes have already started on a temporary basis welcoming a total of 40 to 60 young people, living in Camp Levieux and its surrounds. Some families in the neighborhood have shown a real interest, so it is therefore critical to stabilize all aspects of the project in order to intensify the dynamic over the coming months.
This aspect of the project focuses specifically on the instruments. This funding will be to purchase three guitars and two keyboards. The cost is derived after the submission of three quotations.
The other asset of the music school will be to offer times for meetings, exchanges, concerts, restitution of workshops, etc., around the Mauritian musical heritage and the Indo-Oceanic region. The alliance of the Conservatory with a tertiary institution is completely new in Mauritius and we are proud to carry it.
